Social insurance is an important part of the Swedish social security system. Försäkringskassan (The Swedish Social Insurance Agency) covers everyone that lives or works in Sweden. It provides financial protection for families and children, for persons with a disability and in connection with illness, work injury and old age.
For Social Insurance the traditional handling of applications for Child Care, Employers Service and Pensions meant manual processes for citizens as well as the authorities. Beside being slow this also meant limitations on accessibility and flexibility. Försäkringskassan needed a solution to be able to offer secure Internet services. They decided to use Nordic Edge™ Certificate Services to authenticate the identity of the user.
Försäkringskassan decided to use Nordic Edge™ Certificate Services for automatic user registration.
The service uses e-identification to authenticate the identity of the user. Digital identification is based on certificates from all of the regular providers. Most of the internal smart cards that companies use are supported in the basic product. Examples of certificates that are supported include BankID (Finansiell IDTeknik AB), Telia/SEB hard and soft certificates, Nordea Softcert and all soft X.509-certificates.
Försäkringskassan provides citizens with secure 24-hour access to e-services. Citizens can apply for things like parenting subsidies over the Internet whenever they want. This will save citizens and administrators both time and money. It also reduces lead times for payments.
